Welcome to BCS Nature Connection
We’re so glad you’re here!
The students of Brompton Community School experience a wide range of beautiful moments, diverse habitats, and meaningful learning opportunities in nature. Each class — and each student within it — begins their Nature Connection journey at a different place. We intentionally offer experiences that meet students where they are while also gently nudging them beyond their comfort zones. This stretch helps build sensory awareness, observation skills, and a deeper knowledge of the natural world.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR FRIDAY, APRIL 10TH!
We warmly welcome the community to our campus for a Nature Connection Celebration, 9:30am- 5:30pm. We want to celebrate the Natural World through ACTION, EDUCATION, AND APPRECIATION!
Bring your folding chairs, a picnic lunch, and dress to get dirty. There is something for everyone. Please contact kathy@bromptonschool.org for more information or REGISTER HERE if you are as excited as we are!

BCS Nature Connection Program Goals
The goal of our Nature Connection Program is to facilitate a meaningful connection with the natural world and to encourage students, staff, and community to live out their connection, modeling a mindset of respect and reciprocity.
Through immersive experiences, we seek to use the outdoor environment as a vehicle to Awaken Sensory Awareness, Cultivate Knowledge of Place, and Restore the Bond between People and the rest of Nature.
We understand that shifting perspectives and building relationships takes time and growth looks differently for everyone. Please follow along as we learn, grow, and live out our responsibility.
Intentional Nature Programming: What's it all about?
Differentiated Experiences: We understand that each student has a unique relationship with nature. Differentiation ensures that every student’s experience grows progressively, offering personalized opportunities that align with their diverse interests and needs.
Routinely Scheduled Experiences: Consistent outdoor education is essential for building strong, lasting routines. While spontaneous nature activities will still take place, we now have set times for nature-based learning, led by our Nature Connection Program Leaders, which students and teachers can rely on.
Frequent Engagement: To build a lasting connection with nature, intentional experiences are key and they need to happen often. Our schedule includes weekly outdoor learning experiences led by our dedicated Nature Connection team, along with additional outdoor time thoughtfully integrated by each grade-level teacher.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND NATURE CONNECTION
Fourth and Fifth Grade Students connect Science Curriculum directly with Nature Connection studies, traveling off campus four times a year to practice Nature Connection skills at Mott's Run Reservoir with naturalists Mimi Dempsey and Callie.
K-3 Students connect science exploration with nature activities and meet with Nature Connection Educators in small Nature Connection groups and within their core classes. Generally Speaking, Nature Connection is woven into all that we do!
ADVANCED NATURE STUDIES: MIDDLE SCHOOL- NATURE INTENSIVE PROGRAM
Students with a sincere and committed interest in the natural world were invited to apply to our Advanced Nature Connection class, known as the Nature Intensive Program. Students were accepted based on their ability to be respectful toward adults, peers, and the natural world, as well as their willingness to engage thoughtfully and responsibly in a learning community.
Participation in the Nature Intensive Program also requires a readiness to spend extended time outdoors in all kinds of weather and to explore locations with varied terrain. Nature Intensive students attend class three Fridays each month, often off campus, and commit to making up any academic work missed during these experiences.
Getting dirty, feeling a little hot or a little cold, and staying curious are all expectations for this special group of learners. Throughout the year, students will participate in carefully planned learning experiences both on and off campus, culminating in a two-night field study at the Chincoteague Field Station from May 7–9.

Outdoor Classrooms at BCS
In addition to Nature Connection experiences, our students often spend time outdoors for core classwork in one of our many Outdoor learning spaces. Outdoor classrooms are much like any other. Field studies, reading, and writing are all easily accommodated in a woodland setting. Seating is simple, flexible, and portable. Small groups are quickly assembled and rearranged with plenty of space for everyone. Above all, students are relaxed outdoors and the quiet of the forest is something that just can't be replicated. It's good medicine for kiddos (and teachers) who operate on sensory overload.
Beautiful Spaces Encourage Engagement
Brompton is a beautiful place to learn! Our students benefit profoundly from the opportunity to learn outdoors, on our wooded campus. In addition to regularly scheduled classes with a Nature Connection Specialist, our core classroom teachers intentionally schedule plenty of time for students to learn Science, Language Arts, and History outside, every week.

What's It Like to Learn Outdoors?
There is nothing quite like watching the early morning sun spill through the trees as students settle into their work—quiet, focused, and at ease. Though our classes are only a short walk from the main campus, it feels like they've crossed into another world—a quieter, calmer space where deep thinking comes more easily. In the woods, distractions fall away, curiosity sharpens, creativity flows, and learning becomes a natural extension of being present.
Our students have enjoyed the benefits of outdoor learning since Brompton’s very first year!
So what’s new? We’re expanding our commitment by creating dedicated Outdoor Learning spaces designed to support a wide range of grades and activities. Our campus consists of over twenty, mostly wooded, acres uniquely situated beside the Battlefield Parkland. At Brompton, our teachers know how fortunate we are to partner with the forest on a daily basis. We hold to an age-old truth: Nature is the best co-teacher.
Outdoor Classrooms are not just a place for learning; it’s a space for active care, where we engage our senses and nurture relationships with the living world around us. We encourage students to form a meaningful bond with Nature—one rooted in respect, reciprocity, and curiosity. As poet Mary Oliver reminds us, “Attention without feeling is only a report.” Here in our Outdoor Classrooms, we aim for more than reports—we aim for connection.
Living out the Connections: Students Mentoring Students at BCS
In the short and simple video above, one of our BCS graduates beautifully demonstrates what Nature Connection looks like in action, leading a meaningful experience with a group of much younger students. Rather than following a script or a pre-designed lesson, he simply shares what he knows—and what he feels—about the creatures he loves.
Passing along a love for nature is not only about the knowledge shared, but about the curiosity that is sparked. His words resonate with the younger students, who listen intently, soaking in every sentence. His enthusiasm is contagious, and through this unplanned, authentic moment, the students are immersed in the essence of true Nature Connection.
At the heart of this experience is something even more profound. This kind of sharing isn’t just about teaching facts—it’s about transmitting an attitude. It’s about cultivating respect for the Earth and nurturing a relationship with the natural world that reaches beyond intellectual understanding. This is where real Nature Connection takes root: when passion is passed from one person to another, creating a ripple effect that strengthens the bond we all share with the planet.
This video also highlights a key element of our Nature Program—the importance of stepping out of the way. Our Nature Connection Program Leaders understand that some of the most meaningful lessons are not ones we actively teach. Sometimes, the forest itself holds the lesson. By creating space for students to learn from the environment and from one another, we foster connections that extend beyond academic learning and into lived experience.
At its core, this is the true end goal of Nature Connection: building a community where knowledge, care, and curiosity flow freely, and where every experience—planned or spontaneous—becomes an opportunity to grow, reflect, and connect more deeply with the world around us.
As we continue to guide students on their journeys with nature, moments like this remind us of the quiet power of love, respect, and the wisdom of allowing nature to be the teacher.
Join the BCS Nature Connection Community!
While we’re proud of the goals we've achieved at BCS, it’s important to recognize that our success is rooted in the generosity of our families, teachers, staff, and community partners. Many individuals have given their time, resources, skills, and ideas—often quietly, without seeking recognition or thanks. It is with deep appreciation that we honor the culture of service generated by our tireless volunteers. Their selflessness is not only the foundation of our growth, but a powerful model for the values we hope to instill in our children.
If you would like to join the team of helpers who contribute to the success of our Nature Connection Program, please contact BCS at and we will find a great fit for you, whether you have ten minutes or are looking for a regular commitment.
