Native Plants and Trees
Building a Learning Garden
Although humble at first glance, our Pollinator Garden is growing quickly thanks to our Student Leader Team and Community Garden Helpers, who have worked diligently this year to add native plants and trees to our space. If you’re curious about what’s growing in and around the garden, please check out THIS list of species added this year — made possible by those who have quietly worked behind the scenes, often after school and on weekends, to build biodiversity on our campus.
Our shared vision is to cultivate a learning garden for students and community members who are curious about native species and eager to build knowledge through hands-on experiences that can be replicated at home.
Do you have native seedlings or plants to share? A passion for native plant education? We’d love to hear from you — drop a note to kathy@bromptonschool.org.
Tree Fredericksburg Donations
Tree Fredericksburg is offering 3,000 native trees and shrubs — free of charge! Each household in our area is eligible to receive up to six seedlings. Orders open Monday, March 2nd, for pickup on March 28th.
We encourage everyone to take advantage of this generous program. If you don’t have the space or time to plant native trees and shrubs, please consider ordering seedlings to donate to our Learning Garden.
We will be at Old Mill Park on pickup day and are happy to collect donated plants on site — just indicate during registration that we will be picking them up on your behalf.
Check out Tree Fredericksburg offerings at THIS LINK and drop us a not at kathy@bromptonschool.org if you have any questions.
Friends of the Rappahannock: Native Tree planting
Sarah Dishman, Urban and Community Forestry Specialist with Friends of the Rappahannock, will be joining us on April 10th to help plant native trees across campus. Classes and individual volunteers will work alongside Sarah to plant a variety of species. An expert forester and one of our favorite educators, she has worked with our students in the past and will return later this spring to scout locations and collaborate on tree selection. We’ll keep you posted as plans develop.
Would you like to join your student’s class, plant a tree as a family, or dedicate one in memory of a loved one? We would love to have you join us!
