Project Adoption: Garden Structures

We’re excited to expand our Pollinator Garden with new structures this year. We love using recycled and repurposed materials — whether found on campus or tucked away in your garage! Take a look at what we’re adding to the space and let us know if you’d like to lend a hand.

Below is a list of projects we’ll be working on throughout the year. With the help of volunteers on April 10th, we hope to complete as many as possible. We’ll also keep you updated on which projects have been adopted for Celebration Day. If you are interested in adopting a project, or have further quesitons, please contact kathy@bromptonschool.org.

**Please note: “adopting” a project does not mean you’ll be responsible for supervising students. Brompton teachers and staff will mentor and guide all student participants.

Stick Structures

Stick trellises, wattle fencing, and other structures made from invasive trees or windfall can provide support for tall native plants and climbing vegetables.

You can contribute by helping older students build these structures or by creating a trellis on your own. Stick trellises can be tall or small, and there are endless design possibilities.

Blueberry Fencing

The picture to the right uses a lot more wood than we would need, however it gives you an idea of where we are headed. Whatever we construct, it would be important to use wire with small holes, large enough for pollinators to enter, such as this chicken wire, or hardware cloth. A hoop construction is also an option, although I do not want to purchase new PVC for the product (I have four or five used pipes that I could repurpose).

We have seven native blueberry bushes that were planted last year and have survived the winter.

We are looking for donated materials and a volunteer to help construct the fencing (with or without students).

Repair Raised Beds

When we started our Pollinator Garden in August, we worked hard to remove thick weeds from neglected garden beds. Many of the side boards were rotted or damaged from disuse and inattention. Although we have made do with whatever we had on hand, our quick- fixes will not last another season.

Ideally, we would love to use cedar wood to replace the missing boards, but we are also open to using any recycled wood that is free of termites.

Each garden bed is made up of two 4×4 sections, creating a total bed size of 8×4 feet.

Potting Bench

Bring a drill and some know-how! We could use your help assembling a new potting bench, gifted by one of our beloved Action Team members.

Learning Station

One of our goals for the Pollinator Garden is to create additional outdoor classroom space and various learning centers. We are very fortunate to have received a new shed that will store teaching materials, whiteboards, learning station supplies, and other tools for our teachers to use while holding class in the garden.

We are looking for someone to help assemble our new metal shed (8×4). A drill is required, but the kit should include all other materials needed for construction.
