As a prominent component of Stanford University’s campus, the Old Chem, originally constructed in 1891, served as the home of one of the university’s 25 founding departments, the Department of Chemistry. After over a century of service, the building underwent a renovation and was officially renamed the Sapp Center for Science Teaching and Learning in 2016. Today, it accommodates multidisciplinary undergraduate courses offered by Stanford University. The Sapp Center boasts state-of-the-art biology and chemistry teaching laboratories, libraries, and working spaces, providing ample teaching facilities. The majority of the day will be spent in the underground space, where presentations and keynote lectures will be held in its main auditorium. Strategically situated on the university’s historic core, the Sapp Center stands as one of the few brick and sandstone structures within walking distance of the Oval and the Main Stanford Quad, featuring the iconic Memorial Church.
There are an abundance of parking spaces nearby that are free on the weekend. Parking can be found on Roth Way, Museum Way, Lomita Drive, and near the Stanford Oval. We recommend parking in Roth Way Garage (355 Roth Way Palo Alto, CA 94305), a nearby 5-story parking garage.
You can access the campus through the Caltrain station Palo Alto. From there a short 5 minutes walk will lead you to the Palo Alto Transit Center, where you can board the SamTrans Route 281 (one every 30 minutes). You should get down 4 stops later, at Roth Way & Campus Drive. The venue is accessible via a short 5 minutes walk from the stop. Alternatively, the walk from the Caltrain station to the Sapp Center is ~25 min.
