Heritage BIM

Building Information Modelling (BIM) allows professionals in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry to efficiently create and manage information across the project lifecycle. In this final year module, we explored the process of creating as-built BIM data for an existing building, at which the Birmingham City University School of Art, a Grade I listed heritage building located in Birmingham City Centre, had been made the subject matter of this project.

As citizens in the United Kingdom take pride and admiration for the assortment of historical buildings, it has become increasingly important to preserve the historical context, as well as adapt these cultural assets to make them more relevant and compliant to modern standards in a manner that is respectful to the historical fabric. BIM has been correlated with new-build projects, however, due to its efficient and collaborative nature, BIM can be used to store information onto a central model and extract the information, such as the maintenance reports, in a manner the asset owners can easily understand and access. As a result, this provides clients the information required to undertake the right tasks which doesn’t compromise on the historical fabric, in the most cost-effective procedure.

This project entailed a site survey to be conducted of the Atrium/Exhibition Hall area by a group of 6 members to develop an accurate and true reflection of the building asset in BIM for the client.

Softwares Used: Revit, AutoCAD, Lumion, BIM 360.
