This course continues to build on the reading, writing, and grammatical skills learned in English II. Students will read a variety of texts that focus on the evolution of American literature. Areas of focus include Native American literature, Puritanism, Revolutionary Literature, Romanticism, Realism, and Modernism. Texts will include short stories, poems, speeches, The Crucible and The Great Gatsby. Grammar instruction will focus on effective sentence structure and writing techniques. Students will also explore common rhetorical modes such as compare/contrast and persuasion/argument. By the end of the course, students will have completed a variety of formal essays, one of which will include research and MLA documentation.
