Students will read a variety of texts including a collection of short stories, poems, the novels To Kill a Mockingbird, Night, and Lord of the Flies, and Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. Grammar instruction includes a review of the eight parts of speech and the parts of a sentence. Building on these skills, students will study capitalization, punctuation, sentence structure, and common usage errors. Students will also explore common writing structures such as compare/contrast, argumentative, and expository. By the end of the course, students will have completed three formal essays, one of which will include research and MLA documentation.
