Bakers for Better is a Klein High School Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) Mental Health Promotion competition team focused on combating teen isolation and baking (building) connections! We are part of the Texas HOSA Area 6 Secondary Division.
OUR PURPOSE AND REASON:
Through our Mental Health Promotion project, our team chose to focus teen isolation, a growing issue that significantly impacts teens emotional well being, academic performance, and overall mental health. By raising awareness throughout our school, promoting connection across all platforms, and encouraging support systems in school, our HOSA team aims to empower teens to feel seen, supported, and less alone in our communities!
We started this as just a competition team, and now we’ve grown into a community of pastries!
BY TEENS, FOR TEENS.

Over the course of our campaign we got teacher and student perspective on teen isolation and ways to combat it! This series starts where one of our members interview some teachers and then we show those interviews to students to get their reaction to it. If you click the "interviews" button we have all our interviews there!

One of our bakers, Mahnoor, had the chance to do a research project for her AP Seminar class for a semester long project. Her team chose to do the topic of remote learning causing teen isolation and, coincidentally, it gave us a lot of insight on isolation impacting teen mental health. If you click the button below it will take you to her research article and her teams presentation they presented to peers.
Over the course of a week we did an experiment where we explored if teenage isolation could be reduced in 7 days. On this journey we explored real domestic statistics from students at Klein high school through surveys they filled out as well as additional research and analysis done by our members. Click the experiment button below to go to our page with all 7 days.
The cupcake survey was given out at our friendsgiving social as a way for students to anonymously talk about their experience with teen isolation and get an incentive related to our theme for it! Our baker Lynn made handmade cupcakes to give out at the social as students showed us the "form submitted screen."
Check out our YouTube with our first episode of: Bakers for Real, Teamwork Bakes! The goal of this was to demonstrate one of our biggest protective factors which is friendship. We wanted to show our viewers how teamwork can help you feel more connected with those around you! Click the image to view it on YouTube!
