Corian is a brand of solid surface material invented by DuPont, composed of acrylic polymer and alumina trihydrate (ATH). Corian sheets are used in a variety of applications and are known for being non-porous, versatile, and repairable.
Composition and types
Composition: Corian sheets are made from approximately two-thirds natural minerals (alumina trihydrate) and one-third acrylic polymer. This combination results in a dense, solid material with the look and feel of smooth stone.
Types: In addition to the original 100% acrylic version, modified versions exist that are not as durable and may yellow over time. For long-term use and a better return on investment, the 100% acrylic version is recommended.
Key properties and benefits
Non-porous and hygienic: Corian's non-porous surface is highly resistant to stains and prevents bacteria, mold, and mildew from penetrating the material. This makes it a popular choice for settings where cleanliness is crucial, such as healthcare facilities and kitchens.
Seamless appearance: Adjacent Corian sheets can be joined with a color-matched adhesive, creating virtually invisible seams. This allows for large, continuous surfaces with a sleek, premium look.
Thermoformable: When heated, Corian becomes flexible and can be molded and shaped into two- or three-dimensional forms. This makes it a highly versatile material for creative and complex designs, including curved surfaces and artistic installations.
Durable and repairable: The color and pattern of Corian go all the way through the sheet, which means scratches, cuts, and chips can often be sanded out and the surface restored to its original finish. This "renewability" contributes to the material's longevity.
Translucent: Lighter-colored and thinner Corian sheets are translucent, allowing for unique backlighting effects that are used in artistic and decorative applications.
Resistant: The material is resistant to most stains, high temperatures (up to 100°C), and normal daily wear and tear. It will not delaminate or rot.
Common applications
Kitchens and bathrooms: Widely used for countertops, vanity tops, sinks, bathtubs, and shower walls due to its durability, hygiene, and resistance to water and stains.
Commercial spaces: Its seamless and hygienic properties make it suitable for reception desks, bar tops, and wall cladding in restaurants, hotels, hospitals, and airports.
Custom furniture and decor: The ability to be thermoformed and intricately carved allows for custom furniture, wall panels, designer desks, and decorative elements like jaali partitions.
Specialty uses: Corian is also used for laboratory work surfaces, outdoor furniture, and art objects.
Care and maintenance
Everyday cleaning: For routine cleaning, a damp microfiber cloth and warm soapy water or an ammonia-based cleaner are sufficient.
Stain removal: Most stains can be removed with a non-abrasive cleaner. For tougher stains, a mild bleach solution can be used, followed by a thorough rinse.
Scratch repair: Fine scratches can be buffed out by hand with an abrasive pad. Deeper scratches may require a professional to refinish the surface.
Precautions: While Corian is durable, it is not impervious to all damage. Hot pots should always be placed on a trivet, and strong chemicals should be avoided. It's also recommended to use a cutting board rather than cutting directly on the surface
