Corian Installation
Corian installation involves careful site preparation, templating, and fabrication, followed by a professional on-site assembly process including fitting countertops to cabinets, creating cutouts, and joining pieces using specialized adhesive for seamless, durable surfaces. Proper safety precautions, proper tools, and clean working conditions are essential throughout the installation.
Preparation & Templating
1. Site Preparation:
Before installation, the cabinets must be prepared and checked for cleanliness and any imperfections, such as nicks or tool marks, that could affect the finish.
2. Templating:
Create a template of the exact shape and size of the countertop, ensuring it fits the desired area precisely. This template is also useful for checking clearances for delivery and installation.
Fabrication & Seaming
1. Cutouts:
Cutouts for sinks and cooktops are created using routers, with the edges of the cutouts rounded over to 1/16" (1.5 mm) minimum radius and a minimum 3" (76 mm) support provided around the cutout perimeter.
2. Seaming:
For joining two pieces, clamp them together with a 3/8" (10 mm) gap, ensuring they are parallel and in the same plane. Use a router with a straightedge to remove 1/16" (1.5 mm) from each edge, creating a perfect match.
3. Adhesive:
After cleaning and preparing the seam area, a specialized adhesive is applied to join the pieces.
Installation Steps
Positioning: Place the Corian countertops on the prepared cabinets.
Securing: Secure the countertops to the cabinets.
Final Sealing: After the countertops are in place and secured, apply adhesive to the joints for a seamless, durable finish.
Safety and Tools
Safety Equipment: Wear appropriate safety shoes, eye protection, and gloves.
Ventilation: Ensure the work area is well-ventilated, especially when using adhesives or denatured alcohol.
Tools: Use only sharp router bits and hand tools, and check that all electrical tools are safe.
Important Considerations
Support:
All cutouts and corners need proper support to prevent cracking or failure.
Cleanliness:
Maintain a clean working environment to avoid contamination that could affect the surface and seams.
Professional Installation:
Corian installation requires specific tools and techniques, making professional installation highly recommended.
