As part of its Mediterranean engagement, the Babel Initiative spent the 2024–2025 academic year focused on Morocco — a country where history, heritage, and modern-day transformation converge. The year was marked by a dynamic blend of academic research, local outreach, and high-level institutional engagement, all of which reflect Babels mission to connect students, communities, and ideas across borders.
Each research team focused on a unique dimension of Moroccan society, heritage, or policy, with an eye toward both past legacies and future challenges. The five topics explored during the Morocco year were:
Jewish Heritage Tourism
Theo Hisherik, Pedro Meerbaum, Maia Zasler
Religious Management in Morocco
Naisha Arora, Emin Özdemir, Dana Poliva
Contemporary Music & Identity Formation
Gruffudd Ab Owain, Rosie Betrosian, Lena Kirchner
Intergenerational Music Transmission
István Ocskay-Mattyasovszky, Feidias Psaras, Saloni Suri
2030 World Cup
Marly Fisher, Louis Rosenthal, Saskia Stock
In spring 2025, the Babel team conducted a week-long field research trip across six Moroccan cities. This in-country phase was a defining feature of the year, offering students the chance to deepen their research, connect with local realities, and represent the Initiative in various institutional and community settings.
One of the highlights of the visit was a volunteering activity with JOOD ONG, where students took part in a local food distribution effort. This initiative reflected Babel's commitment to giving back to the communities in which it conducts its work.
Throughout the trip, the team engaged with over 50 stakeholders, including high-level figures such as Fouzi Lekjaa, President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, and Nadia Fettah Alaoui, Minister of Economy and Finance. Other key interlocutors included the UNHCR office in Rabat, professors at Cadi Ayyad University in Marrakech, and the Consulate General of the Kingdom of Morocco in Marseille.
The team also conducted visits to a number of institutions, including the Parliament of Morocco, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, UNHCR Morocco Headquarters, the Institut Français of Rabat, the Hôtel de Ville de Marrakech, and the headquarters of Telquel magazine. These visits formed a core part of the team’s exposure to Morocco’s institutional and cultural landscape
In total, the Morocco year brought together 60 students — researchers, board members, and shadows — supported by €20,000 in funding. The trip marked one of the Babel Initiative's most extensive field programs to date, strengthening both the academic and community-facing dimensions of the project.
The year culminated in the Final Research Colloquium held in April 2025. Hosted on campus, the event brought together researchers, professors, and invited guests — including representatives from the Moroccan Consulate — for a full day of presentations and dialogue.
Each research team had the opportunity to share their findings, reflect on their fieldwork, and respond to feedback from both peers and academic moderators. The colloquium served not only as a moment of academic closure but as a celebration of everything the year had made possible: new partnerships, new perspectives, and a renewed commitment to cultural inquiry.
