The Azores are a group of 9 volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, they are part of the Macaronesia.
The nine islands are divided in three groups: the oriental group formed by Santa Maria and Sao Miguel. The central group formed by Terceira, Graciosa, Sao Jorge, Pico and Faial. And the western group formed by Corvo and Flores.
Every island is different and unique, they share a lot but at the same time if you go there is like nine different worlds.
The Azores is a unique spot to see marine wildlife, especially cetaceans. So far, 28 species of cetaceans have been registered in the archipelago, which supposes approximately 1/3 of the species of the world.
The Azorean society and these animals have been connected in a fascinating way throughout history. Initially in the XVIII century with the sperm whale hunting, and since 1989 with whale and dolphin watching as a touristic activity.
