The effect of non-breeding territoriality on the reproductive success
in the Eurasian Wren (2022 - present)
The Japanese population of Eurasian Wren mainly breed along mountainous streams. In the non-breeding season, wrens have been considered to migrate to the lowland. However, I found that some males keep territoriality along mountanious streams even in the non-breeding season. I am investigating what types of males are able to maintain their territories until the breeding season, and how this affects their reproductive success.
Avifauna of Ashiu Research Forest (2022 - present)
The Ashiu Research Forest, my study site, is one of the biggest forests in western Japan and is inhabited by many avian species. However, the environment is changing due to the overgrazing of deer, the number of which is recently increasing. This trend has also been observed nationwide, with declines reported in bush-dwelling species such as the Japanese Bush Warbler and the Siberian Blue Robin. Birds in Ashiu may also be affected by the environmental change. I am recording what species are inhabiting and breeding in Ashiu.
Impact of Forest Fires on Avifauna in Madagascar (2024)
In recent years, large-scale forest fires have raised concerns about the degradation of tropical dry forests. Such fires pose significant threats to avian species inhabiting these ecosystems. In 2021, a major forest fire occurred in Ankarafantsika National Park, located in northwestern Madagascar. To assess the impact of this event, I conducted a comparative study of bird communities in natural forests and secondary forests affected by the fire.
Current Involvement in Projects and Surveys
Bird Banding Survey
Bird banding surveys involve capturing birds, attaching numbered leg bands, and then releasing them to the wild. By recapturing or observing these birds later, researchers can gather information about their lifespan, migration routes, and other aspects of their ecology. These surveys are conducted across the world and contribute to the understanding and conservation of bird species.
Kyoto Kanmuri Island Research Group
Kanmuri Island in Kyoto is one of the breeding sites of streaked shearwaters. The Kanmuri Island Research Group conducts studies such as banding the birds with leg rings and monitoring their breeding activity. The group also engages in public outreach to raise awareness about the species’ ecology and promote its conservation.
