Verbal, gestural, or physical assistance given to learners to support them in acquiring or engaging in a targeted behavior or skill.
Prompting is used to support students to engage and sustain with a task. Prompting can range from less restrictive methods such as initial directions given by the instructor to highly restrictive practices such as hand-over-hand with the instructor physically guiding the learner to complete the task. The hierarchy of prompting should always be considered from less to most restrictive when selecting a method and when more restrictive prompting methods are used, the instructor should plan specifically to begin fading the more restrictive prompt so that the student gains more independence to complete tasks.
