The Intrepid Museum inially opened as the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on 3rd August 1982 and is located on the West Side of Manhattan at Pier 86 on the Hudson River at 46th Street. The museum depicts the maritime and aviation history of New York City and centers around the USS Intrepid, an Essex-class aircraft carrier first launched in 1943 that saw service in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, as well as a recovery ship for space missions. Along with aircraft exhibits, the museum also houses the USS Growler (a cruise missile submarine docked along side), the Space Shuttle Enterprise Pavillion and the British Airways Concorde exhibition.Â
