The Need:

Sitting in a classroom with a dirty whiteboard is distracting for both students and teachers. There are more than 3 million teachers in the U.S. and over 130,000 schools using over 250,000 whiteboards a year. After surveying many teachers they all agreed that teaching with a dirty board is very distracting and taking ten minutes to clean it during class is out of the question. Students feel very strongly that if their board was clean their learning would be greatly improved. All in all, both students and teachers said that if there was something to clean the board quickly without distraction, they would buy it.

Do teachers actually use whiteboards?

Teachers love to use a whiteboard because it helps with student engagement, it's convenient, and clean. Students are more inclined to feel engaged when teachers write on a whiteboard because teachers use different colors and can express creativity. Whiteboards are convenient because they are easy to write on. Teachers can maneuver around the classroom and every few minutes write on the board. Even more, whiteboards are cleaner than chalkboards. When using a chalkboard, chalk tends to get everywhere, making a mess, as opposed to whiteboards which are clean when erased well. Today, there is still a high demand for whiteboards, so are our goal is to make the experience of using a whiteboard even better.

Existing Products:

There are few products on the market to clean a whiteboard such as, sprays, erasers, and soaps. However, there is no marketed automatic cleaner today. Although some schools use interactive whiteboards with an erase button, whiteboards are both a cheaper and better option. Our automatic cleaner is designed to clean the board in a quick and effective fashion, causing minimal distraction in a classroom.

Survey:

Teachers and students were asked to fill out a survey describing the issue of dirty whiteboards in their classrooms . Many responded that the whiteboards they use are almost always dirty which makes it difficult for the teachers to teach their distracted students.

In an interview we had with a teacher, she expressed that her whiteboard is almost always dirty, and for a teacher who uses the board constantly, she finds it distracting and disruptive to clean. She expressed that most of the time she does not clean the board well, but she ends up wiping it with her sleeve because the eraser which is provided for her is so dirty and instead of the eraser cleaning the board, it dirties it more. She expressed that she would be interested in purchasing a product that would automatically clean the board well for her.

In another interview we had with a student, she said that she found focusing and learning during class was much more challenging with dirty boards. Not only was it distracting but also it was hard to read and copy information from the board.
