To understand our fear of technology we need to know what technology is being used. Automation is the use of electronic control systems for operating processes. Artificial Intelligence are smart machines capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. It is an attempt to simulate human intelligence in machines. Making it possible for computers to learn from experience.
We have always had a hazy exchange with technology. Take in example the Luddite movement in the 18th century, trained textile workers were against using mechanized looms and knitting frames. They were afraid that use of machines and their unskilled operators were a threat to their livelihood. A more recent example of investigation into technology and automation would include the Blue-Ribbon National commission on Technology, Automation, and Economic Progress. This project was commissioned by Lyndon B Johnson to address the concerns that technology increased productivity would:
Replace skilled and semi-skilled workers
Reduced demand for labor base on productivity
Stifle Job creation
As much as new innovations worry us, technology is not all bad. We can use technology to our advantage, there are ways to make yourself comfortable:
Assess current skills and determine gaps based on job market trends
Break learning down into sections and enroll in certificate programs
Look for volunteer opportunities and seek diverse work projects
While technology can be intimidating, we have nothing to fear. Working with new technology can be helpful. It makes us more productive and efficient. Find out how working with innovation can be beneficial.
