From the 24th to the 28th April, young people from Ireland, Iceland, Finland and Türkiye gathered in the stunning region of Cappadocia for the last AURORA mobility. Surrounded by ancient valleys, volcanic rock formations, and a deep-rooted cultural heritage, the mobility blended education, sustainability, and intercultural exchange. The experience offered participants the chance to reflect on environmental responsibility and different approaches to nature while connecting deeply with their surroundings and each other.
The mobility opened with a recap of the AURORA project's themes, goals, and past experience in Iceland. Participants took part in team building activities and insightful discussions on the Erasmus+ Programme in Türkiye and the natural differences between Iceland and Türkiye (especially earthquakes and climate), which deepened mutual understanding and critical thinking. The day ended with some group work reflecting on how the project connects to the youth goals and an engaging overview of the Cappadocia UNESCO sites and conservation efforts, which prepared everyone for the cultural and environmental excursions.
The second day focused on conservation and environmental storytelling. Participants researched and proposed eco-initiatives, filmed interviews to inspire action in their communities, and created interactive maps highlighting trails and natural spots in their home countries. Through this creative work, they used digital tools for meaningful creation and began translating learning into tools for impact, laying the foundation for lasting sustainability awareness from youth to youth.
On the third day, the group explored Cappadocia UNESCO natural sites, including Göreme Panorama, Derinkuyu Underground City, Narlıgöl Volcanic Lake, and Ihlara Valley. They discovered how history and geology intertwine in this region, where ancient communities carved entire cities into rock to adapt to their environment, and had the chance to collect footage for the platform. The day also included cultural stops at a local carpet village and tastings of dried fruits, showcasing how sustainability is deeply embedded in local tradition.
Day four saw participants continuing their exploration of Cappadocia to collect footage for the platform. From the panoramic views of Uçhisar and Ortahisar Castles to the surreal landscapes of Love Valley, Monks Valley, and Devrent Valley, young people captured video content for the AURORA digital platform. They also engaged with local artisans at a pottery workshop and witnessed a traditional leather fashion show, gaining insight into local industries rooted in heritage.
The final day was all about reflection. Participants shared what they had learned—not just about sustainability and cultural heritage, but also about themselves. By comparing different environments and learning how each nation treats, uses and preserve it differently, they developed critical thinking and became more open-minded and appreciative of their own countries.
Partners will now gather content, finalise outputs, and disseminate the project wth activities and events at a local level. Reach out to the partners in your country to find out how to take part and follow the project's instagram page for news!
