From September 23rd to 27th 2024, youth and youth workers from Ireland, Finland and Türkiye gathered in Iceland for an immersive mobility experience centered on Outdoor Learning in Iceland, sustainability, and cultural exchange. The mobility blended hands-on workshops, breathtaking natural explorations, and cross-cultural collaboration, all under the magical backdrop of Iceland’s autumnal landscapes.
The week kicked off with partner organisations introducing their missions and visions, followed by team-building activities to foster connections. Participants delved into sustainable practices and the Erasmus+ programme’s role in supporting eco-initiatives. A group discussion highlighted personal and collective goals for the week, setting the tone for collaboration.
The afternoon featured an Outdoor Learning in Iceland workshop in Reykjanes, where participants learned to integrate nature into education. The day ended with the group embarking on a Northern Lights hunt to start the collection of the project VR footage, followed by a lively Icelandic cultural evening filled with local traditions and storytelling.
Day two focused on STREAM (Science, Technology, Recreation, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) methodologies at Elliðarárstöð, a hub for renewable energy education. Participants engaged in an outdoor workshop, designing activities that blend sustainability with experiential learning. The day ended with a lively Irish cultural night.
On the third day, the group visited Reykjavík’s Center of Outdoor Learning, exploring innovative approaches to nature-based education. A trip to Nauthólsvík’s geothermal baths offered firsthand insight into Iceland’s winter bathing culture. After free time exploring Reykjavík’s vibrant downtown, the evening included a Finnish cultural celebration and another chase for the auroras footage.
A full-day Golden Circle tour immersed participants in Iceland’s iconic landscapes: Þingvellir National Park, Geysir, and Gullfoss waterfall. Outdoor Learning sessions along the route emphasised ecological stewardship and nature’s role in education. The day concluded with a Turkish cultural evening and a final successful attempt to witness and record the amazing Northern Lights.
The final day centered on reflection. Participants reviewed augmented reality (AR) footage, received their Youth Pass, and shared insights and feedback on the week’s impact.
Partners will finalise the project Guidebook and host some local activities for young people in preparation for the next mobility! This time, we will be going to Cappadocia, Türkiye!
