Thoughts
On arrival the AudioMoth looks a well put together piece of kit.
Things to know are:
The maximum frequency of recording is half the sample rate so if the set sample rate to is 384Kbs then the max frequency is 192Khz - which is more than enough for UK bats.
The higher the sample rate the bigger the file and the faster the SD card needs to be. So for bats, I'm using a Toshiba Experia card which is Class 10 and U3. You need to look closely as most Class 10 cards are U1 which may not handle the data, the project recommends the SanDisk Extreme.
As of 2023 AudioMoth firmware allows for triggered recordings but I've never managed to get it to work for me. So I stick to timed recordings, so you will need a way of sifting through the files to find the bat calls, There is a piece of software code written in Python that will do this, see the Software page.
I'm only putting out the units for 2 or 3 days, so batteries aren't quite as important. I'm currently using GP Ultra from 7dayshop.com and they appear to be holding up for my usage without being prohibitively expensive.
It comes naked, so for using outdoors you either need a plastic bag or it's time to go DIY and there's a page above on Housings or there's a forum subsection on the AudioMoth website for people to discuss their solutions.
