Tier 1

Establishing A Multi-Tiered Framework

The literature related to improving student attendance is very clear that the most promising outcomes occur with prevention and early intervention (Kearney, 2017; Wimmer, 2013).  As a result, it is essential that schools and districts interested in promoting attendance establish a School Attendance Team to develop systems, data and practices to support students across tiers.  These documents support building teams to identify and establish an attendance team and develop a consistent protocol for preventing and responding to attendance concerns.

Meeting Foundations

School personnel spend over 4 million hours annually in team meetings.  In order to make meetings as efficient and effective as possible, it is essential to establish strong meeting foundations.  The following documents are available to support teams to be as effective as possible.

Tier 1 Steps

If you use PowerSchool as your Student Information System, you can find instructions on how to pull these reports here.

Step 2: Review Data and Determing Level of Need

Step 3: Self-Assessment

Self-Assessment

To determine the Tier 1 strategies that are likely to be effective in a particular setting, Attendance Teams should complete the Self-Assessment.  This, combined with a review of the attendance data, should inform next steps.
