Establishing A Multi-Tiered Framework
The literature related to improving student attendance is very clear that the most promising outcomes occur with prevention and early intervention (Kearney, 2017; Wimmer, 2013). As a result, it is essential that schools and districts interested in promoting attendance establish a School Attendance Team to develop systems, data and practices to support students across tiers. These documents support building teams to identify and establish an attendance team and develop a consistent protocol for preventing and responding to attendance concerns.

The first thing that Attendance Teams need to do is establish a consistent method for collecting and reviewing attendance data on a regular basis. These data should be reviewed bi-weekly at a minimum. Two key pieces of data that MUST be included in attendance reviews are:
- Percent of students on track for chronic absenteeism or the percent of students attending fewer than 90% of school days (PowerSchool System Report ADA/ADM by Student)
- Average Daily Percent Attendance (PowerSchool System Report ADA/ADM by Date)
If you use PowerSchool as your Student Information System, you can find instructions on how to pull these reports here.
