Today we visited the massive rock outcropping which houses a former fortress and village. The city was designed in a maze like fashion to improve security. If invaders attempted to enter the complex, they would be met with many confusing turns and places where they could either get lost or become ambushed. Monemvasia means single approach (city of single approach or entrance), which makes sense since there was only one way into the fortified rock village. It’s been nicknamed the Gibraltar of the East.
After our orientation walk, some of us headed up to the old fort up on the top of the rock. There were scattered ruins along the way, remnants of the village of about 40,000 people at it’s peak. Sophia has been restored and was beautifully perched on the side of the rock. After Sophia, we continued up to the Citadel. It was perched on the edge nearest the city of Monevasia. One square building was still intact, but the rest were ruins.
We were treated with stunning views of the city, hillside, and Aegean Sea. We ended up walking down a different path than the one the took us to the top. That was nice since it allowed us to see a whole other set of ruins and views. We saw remnants of towers, domed buildings, and broken walls.
One of the most interesting things we saw was an old cistern system. Since water was vital to survival on the rock, the Greeks had developed a complex water system. One in particular that we viewed was a large area that was walled off and had ground that slanted down toward a very large cistern with two openings at the top and one on each side. We were impressed at the engineering, design, and building skills of these people.
At 5:00, we all met in the breakfast area for our cooking demonstration. They needed 6 volunteers, so Abby and I participated. They decked us out in aprons, hair nets, and gloves. One of the owners of the place, Rena, led the demo and directed each of us through a part of the preparations. Will mixed the Tzatziki. I made the Eggplant Moussaka. Audrey made the Bechamel cream to go with it. Coco made the Chickpea Pattie’s. Abby and Anna made the Baklavas dessert. We ate our masterpieces for dinner.
