Athabasca, officially the Republic of Athabasca, is a sovereign, independent nation located in Northern Alberta, Canada.
The concept of a sovereign Athabascan state can be traced back to the District of Athabasca, existing from 1882 under the Canadian Northwest Territories until 1905, where it would be merged with the District of Alberta to form the province of Alberta. Throughout the 20th century, the region that would become the Republic of Athabasca would grow into numerous regional communities, blossoming a new culture around Lake Athabasca.
In August 2023, local activist and political hobbyist, Andrew Snye would begin experimenting with the concept of a sovereign state in Alberta, originally acting as a critique of larger WEXIT movements before evolving into the Athabascan Sovereignist Movement. The activities of the movement would lay dormant for a few months until in October, where Andrew Snye would officially declare the Republic of Athabasca as a sovereign, independent state and begin forming an online presence to better represent and explore a unique, local Athabascan culture.
As of 2024, the Republic of Athabasca boasts over 30 proud Athabascans and an active, thriving community dedicated to establishing a sovereign, democratic republic.
