In 2023, Athabasca was founded as a sovereign republic, being located in the Canadian region of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Athabasca's history traces back centuries ago to when the land was originally inhabited by various indigenous groups, most prominently the Cree and Dene peoples. Since the existence of Canada, Athabasca has existed under various names and territories, most prominently as the District of Athabasca from 1882 to 1905, being later integrated into the Canadian province of Alberta.
