Black-tailed Gulls @ Daebudo

Surrounded by a massive flock of black-tailed gulls on tiny Kabushima, listening to their overwhelming chorus, a memory from eight years ago suddenly flashed back to us.

Back in 2014, we were based near Seoul, South Korea, creating new work. During that time, we visited the getbol (tidal flats) of Daebudo, where we received a wild welcome—and baptism—from a huge flock of black-tailed gulls! Completely fearless of humans, they flapped their wings leisurely right at head height. Naturally, they were a noisy bunch.

At the time, we didn't have any particular interest or fascination with black-tailed gulls; we were simply gazing at them. Yet, no matter how many times we experience it, there is something deeply delightful about how such ordinary past moments suddenly weave themselves into part of a narrative.
