It is well-established scientific fact that anthropogenic climate change is having an adverse impact on the environment.
A few concise statements can provide some very clear conclusions from the academic research that are salient points for
everyone to be aware of:
Climate change is impacting the planet
Climate change is driven by human influence (anthropogenic climate change)
Climate change is accelerating at a pace that is unprecedented in modern history (this is the “scary” one)
With these well-established facts in mind, the days of debating climate change are past us.
There are NO good faith arguments that can topple the overwhelming amount of evidence that definitively shows that
climate change will alter our daily lives in the no-so-distant future. That, however, does not mean that debate does not
have a place in the discussions. The discussion that IS valid is what can be done to solve climate change? What are some of
the adverse effects we can expect from climate change AND what are the solutions (that won't cripple economic growth) that
we can pursue. THAT is the purpose of this experience.
There is ONE team that will serve as a jury. The jury will:
Create a short 5 minute presentation that describes at least 5 negative impacts of climate change and why it is an important issue to solve. You can present LIVE or create a recording to be shown at the beginning of the game (5 points group, 5 points for your individual contribution).
Create AND ASK at least 3 unique questions to ask EACH team about their solution. This means you must research all the solutions being presented! (15 points).
Judge each presentation and determine a portion of every team’s grade.
Determine which team is the winner. The winning team receives an automatic perfect score.
FIND a proposed solution to climate change. The recommendation is to use solutions from project drawdown here: https://drawdown.org/solutions/table-of-solutions
Once you find a solution, you will present this solution to the class. At a minimum your presentation must quantify how big the impact of your proposed solution is and how scaleable the solution is (i.e. does it need to be a large scale industrial solution, a government run solution, can an average person do it, etc.). You can use ANY presentation material/resource you want, but you SHOULD practice so you are ready to present SMOOTHLY. Zoom presentations can be tricky if you don’t practice, so make sure you try things out in advance!
Your team will ALSO research flaws in ANOTHER TEAM’S solution AND challenge them during their presentation.
Your grade will be based on the quality of your overall presentation (5 points), your individual contribution to the presentation (5 points), how well you respond to the jury questions (5 points), how well you ATTACK ANOTHER TEAM (5 points) and how well you DEFEND against your team’s attack (5 points).
Good luck and may the odds be ever in your favor!
