AS ACCESS VRI

GETTING STARTED

  • Interpreter should sit facing a window or make use of soft artificial light, placed behind computer and facing interpreter. Light cast upwards or from either side or from behind interpreter can cause annoying glare that may be distracting to the consumer.

  • Make sure that your webcam is at eye level. You can use a vented platform like this one (opens in new window) designed specifically for this purpose.

  • Hang a sign like this one (opens in new window) on the exterior of your office door while working, unless you live alone.

  • Install a solid, neutral-colored backdrop (opens in new window) preferably one with a stand (opens in new window) for stability and mobility. NOTE: The backdrop needs to be wide enough to completely span your webcam's field of view.

  • Your office should be separate from living space, located in a quiet and non-intrusive area of the home, with a door that can be closed and locked.

  • Remember, your home office is a business and must remain HIPAA compliant. See guidelines for Securely Teleworking in Healthcare (opens in new window).

INTERPRETER DRESS CODE

Interpreters are asked to observe a "business casual" dress code and must be neat and well-groomed at all times while working. A professional demeanor is expected, no matter the hour of the day or night. REMEMBER: YOU ARE THE FACE OF AS VRI!

If environmental noise is an issue...

You can build simple, effective soundproof panels, such as this one demonstrated on YouTube (opens in new window) or simply use a filled bookcase or two as a noise barrier.

NOTE: Interpreters are not required to soundproof their home office, but it may be helpful to do so.
