Abstract: Interested in the ways industries of entertainment and performance have survived the COVID-19 pandemic, our goal is to conduct a social network analysis (using data visualization), in addition to textual analysis, of the ways in which the audience, fans, and platform users are engaging with a campaign created by the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA). NIVA was formed in March 2020 as a political lobbyist group for independent music venues.
Utilizing #SaveOurStages and its festival-specific campaign #SOSFest, our analysis attempts to account for the politically economic losses incurred by COVID-19, and in doing so looks to encourage Congress to pass the Save Our Stages and RESTART Acts: payback protection programs that look to fund and “restart” entertainment venues (#RESTARTAct). YouTube’s extensive, streamlined programming for #SOSFest situates the festival—a source of funding for about three thousand historical venues facing closure across the United States—within the context of participatory platforms that stream performance in real-time. With these analyses, we argue that legislation like the Save Our Stages/RESTART Acts represents temporary solutions to larger inequities present in the music business and entertainment industries. As the coronavirus has accelerated our sense of telepresence, we look to analyze the ways in which users engage with new ways of experiencing convergent, live music performances as the fate of physical entertainment venues remains in balance.
