Course Description:
In this lab, we learned how to practically apply what we were actively learning in Physical Dysfunction Lecture. This course is designated as a CEL course.
Some highlights included:
Participating in all of SLCC's pro-bono clinics offered
Learning how to complete a discharge treatment under the direction of an OT/R
Collaborating with the OT students at the U and the PTA students at SLCC.
Learning Objectives:
Identify how to utilize and apply an occupational therapy frame of reference when learning to evaluate and contribute to the treatment planning of an individual with physical dysfunction.
Demonstrate proficiency in treatment techniques and compensatory/remedial strategies for various diagnoses.
Demonstrate training in techniques to enhance functional mobility, including physical transfers, wheelchair management, and mobility devices.
Demonstrate competency in development, remediation, and compensation for varying body functions outlined in the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework.
Accurately record treatment sessions content.
Use measures and quantitative standards such as numbers of repetitions, variation of size, time measurements et al. with documentation.
Develop and document a thorough treatment plan based upon an accurate analysis of a patient’s history, current level of function, and goals.
Analyze activity into logical components that will adjust to the therapeutic needs of patients.
Facilitate discharge planning by reviewing the needs of the client, caregiver, family, and significant others; available resources; and discharge environment, and identify those needs to the occupational therapist, client, and others involved in discharge planning.

Complete clinic rotations for service learning.
Participate in a joint project with PTA students.
Demonstrate appropriate interpersonal skills during coursework and lab practical exams.
Participating in the clinics at SLCC was a really neat experience. The clinic is located in the OTA lab space in the Health Science building: 3491 W. 9000 S, West Jordan, UT.
Whereas we only shadowed last year, this semester we were expected to take the lead in planning, implementing, and documenting sessions with real clients. I only got to participate with one adult client, and I attended clinic on 3/26, 4/9, and led on 4/16 for his discharge. Read about my experience in the reflection provided.
This assignment helped me fulfill the learning objectives:
Identify how to utilize and apply an occupational therapy frame of reference when learning to evaluate and contribute to the treatment planning of an individual with physical dysfunction.
Demonstrate proficiency in treatment techniques and compensatory/remedial strategies for various diagnoses.
Promote the use of appropriate home and community programming to support performance in the client's natural environment and participation in all contexts relevant to the client by creating a home exercise program (HEP).
Accurately record treatment sessions content.
Use measures and quantitative standards such as numbers of repetitions, variation of size, time measurements et al. with documentation.
This is one of the HEP's I created to send home with a client who was being discharged for the summer. It contains stretches for him to work on to improve his shoulder and wrist Range of Motion.
