Course Description: This course was a continuation of the physical dysfunction lecture we took in the Fall Semester. We continued the study of additional adult disabilities to learn about the effects of dysfunction on occupational habits and occupational roles, applied the OT process, problem-solved ideas, and were introduced to rehabilitation assessment, treatment techniques, and community resources.
Learning Objectives:
Idenitfy the etiology, prevalence, process, and OT areas of evaluation and treatment regarding various physically disabling conditions experienced by adults.
Articulate training methods and resources for patients and caregivers in techniques to enhance community mobility, including public transportation, community access, and issues related to driver rehabilitation.
Research and present an innovative treatment technique pertaining to a physical disability to peers.
Demonstrate proficiency in utilizing presented information to clinically reason and implement treatment.
Explain how lifelong learning is crucial to maintaining competence in health professions.
Student will effectively use appropriate and evidence-based information technology to complete written and oral communication.
For this assignment, I had to choose one diagnosis or topic from either semester and develop a clinical question regarding OT assessment or diagnosis, and then apply the evidence-based practice process to develop an answer. I found 5 primary references and created an annotated bibliography of sorts to prepare for the final research paper. I then presented my findings to my class. Throughout this process, I was able to practice my research skills, especially finding evidence-based sources. I learned what OT's are currently doing to help treat cancer survivors and got to apply my own clinical knowledge to come up with ways we could be more involved. You can read my research on OT's role in cancer survivorship and suggestions for future practice in my article attached to the left.
