“Xiao Xin Nian” is a miniature version of a revised settlement occasion that happens during Chinese New Year with a little play of its folklore. The entire interactive installation allows users to interact and experience the joyous Chinese New Year while getting to understand folklore better.
ABOUT
The entire interactive installation has five different interactive scenarios of a Chinese New Year, mainly “lion dance”, “reunion dinner”, “firecracker”, “couplets & lantern” and “fireworks”. Different scenarios would be triggered accordingly to the interaction between the user and our installation.
Within our installation, we have multiple miniature scenes set up with a mini Merlion and Guangzhou Tower to represent Guangzhou China with Singapore. As this project was a collaboration between my team and another group of Guangzhou students. Therefore, both the mini landmarks are representative elements to convey the cultural difference and similarities between Singapore and Guangzhou, China’s Chinese New Year.
PROCESS
My team’s interactive installation was meant to create an experience whereby people can understand the traditional culture, folklore, and practices during the Chinese New Year in Singapore and Guangzhou.
From the beginning of the project, my team split up to do deep research on Singapore and Guangzhou's Chinese New Year’s differences. We also explored how to convey the concept of ‘touch’ with senses and ‘festival’ characteristics. We wrapped up the research phase with a summary of the cultural differences and folklore during Chinese New Year.
After aligning our concept and ideation on every small to big scale detail with the Guangzhou team, we finalised the objective and goals for this project together. From there, half of the team began working on the interactions, look, and feel of the entire miniature set while the rest worked on how to animate the content.
We then summed up the project gradually by arranging the table layout, character designs, and the mapping of the animation onto the miniature set.
MY INVOLVEMENT
My role involved in this project was mainly on researching, sort, and building the miniature set. My involvement in the research phase was summarising the various elements involved during Chinese New Year celebrations in Singapore and Guangzhou. Also, I contributed my part in the ideating, conceptualizing, and sourcing of parts for the miniature set.
