About Me
About Me
Hi! I'm Ashley Barnard, the creator of the Block in Time app and developer of various evaluation apps for psychologists. Those are currently only on my phone - publishing an app is a lot of work!
I have a Bachelor's in Behavioral Biology and an Education Specialist degree in School Psychology. While I didn't attain a doctorate, primarily (solely?) due to the ADHD effect on the ability to write an easy dissertation (everything else was done), at least an Ed.S. is still a step above a Master's degree. The interfering symptoms of ADHD = difficulty getting started, maintaining motivation, and lack of follow-through. Oh well.
I work with my husband, Dr. David Prince, Psy.D., in his private practice where we serve children and adults through evaluations and therapy. We conduct evaluations for ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, learning disabilities, giftedness, and more. The person with the doctorate (aka licensed psychologist, Dr. Prince) diagnoses and provides therapy. One of my greatest passions is advocating for children who need extra support, especially when schools aren't providing it for those who think or learn differently.
Living with ADHD has shaped both my personal and professional perspectives in meaningful ways. I love connecting with others who have ADHD and helping them understand that their childhood struggles weren't about laziness, lack of intelligence, or not caring—they were due to neurological differences. In our practice, we often evaluate parents after their children receive ADHD diagnoses. During results meetings, we frequently see one parent elbowing the other, saying, "You do that! That's just like you!" as the pieces fall into place.
I'm a big fan of Dani Donovan's ADHD comics; they perfectly capture daily life with ADHD and give others insight into what living with ADHD looks like. I find them helpful for newly diagnosed teens, parents, and adults. Her Anti-Planner book is a must-buy! Hmm. This paragraph should probably be moved. That's another difficulty for many with ADHD - organizing their thoughts on paper.
Like many people with ADHD, I get excited about new projects and often lose steam when something more interesting comes along. I actually loved learning HTML and creating websites back in the day. Still, that passion fell by the wayside, which is why you're looking at this ridiculously vanilla, text-only web page that I threw together just to get something online! This pattern of diving deep into interests and then moving on to the next shiny thing is such a huge part of ADHD. I am the type of person who always sees a better way, and this creativity is coming out in my desire to make apps that don't exist or that don't fit my needs. It's like I'm obsessed (ah, the hyperfocus of ADHD). Creating tools that actually help people is motivating. I hope my first ADHD app makes managing ADHD and other challenges a little easier for everyone who uses it. Hoping it can help with the daily family nightmare known as homework.
Thanks for taking the time to learn about me. Back to work!
