Ashland Historical Markers

The history of Ashland, Kentucky dates back to 1799 when members of the Poage family acquired a land claim and established what was soon to be Ashland. Although there were disputes over who were the first settlers of Ashland, the courts sided with the Poages and declared them as the landowners, which is where the name Poages' Landing originated.  Later, the city's name was changed to reflect one of our country's prominent historical figures, Henry Clay.  The name Ashland came from Clay's estate.

Ashland has numerous historical markers scattered throughout the downtown area that showcase the city's rich history. Within walking distance of each other, visitors can find the Presbyterian Church, which is the oldest church in Boyd County and was organized at the home of Maj Jas Poage, and the Wiard Cannon marker, which tells the story of Norman Wiard, a former Canadian who fought in the Civil War and invented several pieces of light ordnance. Ashland's history is fascinating and can be explored through the many more historical markers found throughout the downtown area.
