There are certain standards that counselors need to uphold in voluntary positions. While counselors are encouraged to devote a portion of their professional activities for little or no financial return in order to contribute to society (pro bono publico), they are still held to uphold the American Counseling Society (ACA) Code of Ethics (2014). This means that even though no payment will be received, the counselor still has a responsibility to respect and safeguard any client’s right to confidentiality and privacy, while facilitating growth, welfare, healthy relationships, and professional boundaries.
