Thesis Title: Assessing the Effectiveness of Information and Communication Technology Enabled Higher Education.

Research Area: General Management, Cross-Disciplinary, Education, Management information systems, Information Technology.

Keywords: Information and Communication Technology, Management, Distance Education, Statistical analysis, Quantitative, Qualitative

9.1 Thesis Abstract:

Education helps in creation, refinement and preservation of knowledge in a society. There are several barriers for students in India, as well as all over the world, to access quality education. One way to increase access and quality of education is to open more traditional face to face classroom universities. This study explores alternate ways of using Information and Communication Technology (ICT), especially through satellite and internet, to make education more accessible for all. The study focuses on the ICT enabled distance higher education programs, which allow for synchronous and asynchronous interaction.

Student satisfaction is important within ICT enabled distance education programs. With low satisfaction, students usually drop out of courses. This can affect the sustainability of distance education programs. This study plans to identify the critical success factors that influence the satisfaction of students who participate in a two-way interactive ICT enabled distance education process. In addition, this study compares regular traditional face to face education in a traditional campus-based mode with two-way interactive ICT enabled distance education mode on the critical success factors. It focuses on the classroom environment in both the modes of the program.

This study has attempted to understand the nuances of the learning process of students in an ICT enabled distance education process. After examining several theories through a literature review, it was found that ‘perceived interaction’ is one of the crucial parameters in the learning process. The critical factors for the success of such interactive technology-based distance education courses are that of the perceived interaction of the student, with content, with faculty, with other students, with technology and finally vicarious or indirect interaction. Grades of the students awarded by academic institutes, although an indicator of academic performance or learning effectiveness, were unfortunately not made available for this study.

Hypotheses were formed with the null hypothesis stating that there was no relationship between the five types of perceived interaction and perceived satisfaction in traditional face to face mode and ICT enabled distance education mode. Hypotheses also stated that there was no difference between traditional and ICT enabled education on these six measures.

An original survey questionnaire was designed and improved iteratively, post every study. Five studies were carried out in three various settings. Ideal experimental conditions with a control group and an experimental group were sincerely attempted but the efforts were unsuccessful for reasons such as unavailability of permissions from organizations or unwillingness of students and faculty, at the designated site, to participate in the experiment. A pilot study, and later a final study, was conducted with cooperation from Organization X.

Statistical techniques used to analyze the primary data include Exploratory Factor Analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Cronbach Alpha Reliability test, Non-Parametric tests such as Spearman rank correlation, Mann Whitney U-test and Kruskal Wallis test. An analysis was conducted on the collected primary data, which rejected all the null hypotheses except one. Similarly, open-ended qualitative data were analyzed using frequency analysis and content analysis.

The study confirmed that perceptions of different types of interactions in education are positively correlated with the perceived satisfaction levels experienced by the students in both face to face traditional and ICT enabled virtual classroom modes. It also demonstrated how traditional classroom education is perceived as superior to ICT enabled distance education in a statistically significant manner on all measures of perceived interaction except interaction with technology, and satisfaction.

The most interesting personal insight during the study, even though rather obvious, was that the educational process, even in classrooms, should involve agreements, discussions as well as disagreements to create knowledge and not just passively transmit or receive knowledge.
