I never really thought about hardwork and dedication. I had thought you use hardwork in your school work and sometimes in your job if you are dedicated to it. But on the trip to Denver I was able to clarify and define these beliefs. On the trip, we met Bobby who was a world class cook, but became a worker at The Denver Rescue Mission, he was dedicated to helping the homeless population find work and jobs. This type of work is selfless and called being an active citizen in ones community. Now it is time to take the next step to helping our community of Iowa City. I know that I can help my fellow community members now by utlizing these traits to really make a difference in others lives.

• clarified as: not only concern for the suffering of others and acknowledgment of their hardships, but actively working to have a positive impact on those around you and to help in any way that you can.
• pre-trip: I was unsure of the impact that I as an individual could have on those facing homelessness in Denver. I felt that my personal efforts would not make a huge difference for the community because I am just one person.
• post-trip: I have learned that my individual choice to spend spring break doing service, along with each person's choice to do the same in my group, together made a lasting and worthwhile impact on both the members of the Denver community facing homelessness and everyone in my group as well. Making the choice to care and to be an active citizen clarified what compassion means to me as an individual and will impact how I interact with others in my daily life, teaching me not to underestimate the difference I can make when working with others.
