Plant-beings amaze me– their uniquely patterned arrangements are integral to each plant’s structure and growth. I am in awe of the extraordinary consistency with which the geometric relationships remain whole as a plant moves through its seasonal cycles–transforming from seed to shoot, stalk to branch, bud to flower, and to seedpod–only to be broken open for the single purpose of continuing its earthly presence. Seedpod Flower I is a celebration of this story of transformation, perhaps a blurred moment where all the cycles exist at once.

With a 3/6 symmetry that is found in soccer balls and viruses, this "truncated icosahedron" came about in the early part of the pandemic and reflects the collective "goo" we all became together as we experienced globally so much grief and life within our cocoons.
Dormant in the caterpillar, imaginal cells – the seeds of future potential - contain the blueprint of a flying creature. When the caterpillar is still, these cells dissolve into organic "goo" inside the chrysalis and thus begins a process of creating a new form and structure. These cells operate independently as single-cell organisms. As they multiply, and connect with each other, the imaginal cells form clusters and clumps, and begin to resonating at the same frequency, passing information back and forth. Acting not as discrete individual cells but as a multi-cell organism until they form into a new creature – and a butterfly is born.

This form is known as a Vector Equilibrium (VE) Sphere, coined by Buckminster Fuller. The center point is equidistant from all surface points and each surface point is also that same distance from each other giving the form incredible stability, strength and flexibility.

I constructed this journal for the purpose of taking notes for a virtual and live 3-month Embodied Social Justice Certificate program. I was interested in how I might receive information in a visceral way and record this process for myself.
This journal uses paper circle pages which manifested into a non-linear and self-organizing "book" with a life of its own. In the process of journaling, I discovered that my relationship to the "Blank Page" syndrome (symptoms include goal oriented perfectionism and heart-brain constriction) was being re-framed and re-shaped. My body heart mind yearned to remain open, porous, and curious throughout the program and this journal supported that process for me. This video is a record of that "oompf!" that happened with in me and how this "circle journal" supported that process.
My practice as an embodied social justice seeker, doer, and lover aligns with my practice of folding and being with circles; folding circles is literally part of my artistic lineage and one that offers continual opportunities for making connections and change in an embodied and transformative way.

Arts for Learning Northwest hosts an annual fashion show fundraiser featuring SH/FT, their their design mentorship program for teens interested in experimental fashion to collaborate and create alongside a professional designer mentor. This is where my team of three amazing high school students and I landed.
Jellyfish are growing in numbers throughout all of the earth's oceans, seemingly resistant to climate warming and increasing oceanic acidification; meanwhile, their predators fatally mistake translucent flowy plastics in the ocean as jellyfish delicacies. Composed of about 95 percent water, jellyfish immediately collapse into deflated blobs when removed from water.

This piece evolved out of my work with middle schoolers during the quarantine where we explored the hot question of "Where are you from?" and what this means for each of us at any given point in time. We used Google Earth to locate places and landscapes that evoked connected in some way to our experience of how we resonated with the question prompt.
