Debunking Propaganda

Azerbaijan is a master of controlling the narrative to negatively frame the Armenian people. We've compiled a list of commonly used Azerbaijani propaganda/misinformation tactics and debunked each one.

• Azerbaijan claims that the land of Artsakh is Caucasian Albanian. This is FALSE

• Armenians have been living on the land a long time.

  • The historic churches prove this, which is why Azerbaijans are destroying and vandalizing them.

• Azerbaijanis use Khojaly as justification for their actions. Here's what really happened, and why that defense doesn't work:

  • On February 26th, 1992, 161 Azerbaijani civilians were killed by Armenian forces.

    • Azerbaijan attacked Armenian civilians and blockaded a nearby airport causing many casualties and lack of medical and food supplies. Khojaly was a convenient place to bomb the capital of Artskah (Stepanakert).

    • Ten days before the invasion, Armenians warned the citizens of Khojaly to evacuate, and even provided a passage for the evacuation.

    • The Azerbaijani government did not help in the evacuation.

      • Former Khojaly mayor, Elmar Mamedov said to Megapolis-Express, “ I have also asked to send a helicopter for the transportation of the elderly, woman and children. But no help came.”

      • Salman Abasov (Khojaly resident) said in Black Garden, “Several days before the tragedy the Armenian told us several times over the radio that they would capture the town and demanded that we leave it... We received practically no help [from the Azerbaijani side]. Moreover, when it was possible to take our women, children out of the town, we were persuaded not to do so.”

      • Ramiz Fataliyev, the chairman of the committee to investigate Khojaly said, “On February 22, a meeting of the Council of National Security took place, attended by the president, prime minister, the KGB chairman and others. A decision was made not to evacuate the population of Khojaly.”"

• From the same playbook as Khojaly, Azerbaijanis claim Armenia intentionally destroyed Ganja (a city located Azerbaijan). The real perpetrators of Ganja were not Armenians.

  • Ganja was attacked by the mercenaries Azerbaijan hired when they failed to pay them.

  • Armenia did fire in Ganja to attack their military base, but the President of Artsakh called off the attack to avoid the loss of civilian life in the city.
