"Our civilization will flourish as long as we win the race between the growing power of technology and the wisdom with which we manage it" (Conn, Future of Life Institute).
The Duality of AI:
Artificial Intelligence is arguably one of the most influential and powerful technologies ever created. AI is transforming every aspect of our world, from revolutionizing healthcare, redefining education, and reshaping technology. But, as with all powerful technologies and tools, AI's impact relates to how it is governed and regulated.
The duality of AI is evident. It is both a force for good and contains risks when left unchecked. Like Frankenstein's creature, AI is not inherently evil and possesses the potential to launch humanity into a new era of growth, if cautiously nurtured, overseen, and regulated. If not regulated, however, unchecked human ambition could lead to unintended consequences.
Despite the numerous benefits of Artificial Intelligence and the potential harms, it is important that humanity as a whole regulates, oversees, and enforces a safe standard when creating AI.
We must regulate the AI race to ensure greater accountability, alignment with ethics, and a focus on the greater good of humanity.
Uzair Khan is a cybersecurity student with a minor in computer science. In his college Honors English course, he was tasked with creating a digital form of his argument regarding AI regulation. In his class, he also wrote an allegorical tale paperback book for teens, regarding technology's influence on human daily life and how overstimulation can be harmful. The book is titled Ayla and the Alluring Mirror World and can be found on Amazon.
