This year I have been very loose with my illustration. During my post-secondary studies I used my art as an outlet, and I really let my pencil lead the way. My natural sketching style has been very fast, and free flowing. Learning to let go of precision, and exagerate the impact and the motion of my figures has given me a new appreciation for the balance and form of my lines. I'm beginning to reset again as school is over, and I'm returning to my studies of anatomy, and drawing from life. It's been an emotional year of illustration.
My focus of 2023 was on using different mediums to help me quickly and effectively represent different types of fabric. My thought was that in order to understand the texture of every fibre and weave, I would first need to understand how to use the mediums that would represent them most effectively. Some of my illustrations include gouache, pastel, watercolour, pencil crayon, and I've continued to love pen and pencil.
This year was about grounding my art in reality. Although I love drawing exagerated characters, aliens, superheroes, and monsters; I needed to challenge myself by drawing without emotion. I was encouraged by the administration at NTS to draw still lifes, which I did almost daily throughout the year, and my work slowed right down.Â
This was my first year of fashion/costume illustration. I started to practice thinking of new ways to represent, and characterize the human form in clothing. I also truly began to understand haw to draw drape, and different patterns.
