Painting with Cold Wax Medium (Introduction)
A relatively new and different way of thinking about art-making, working with cold wax medium is a process, a set of experiments and discoveries – the medium challenges and gives pleasure, it’s sensual and holds infinite possibilities for any type of art practice.
Whether beginner artist or expert in your artistic field already (and even if you’ve been to Janet’s workshops previously), the medium allows for infinite experimentation and development. For this class you will learn techniques such as sgraffito, mono-printing and stencilling while creating layers with colours and textures in an abstracted approach. Noreen Melvin will work closely with Janet to ensure you receive strong guidance throughout the class. She is a very experienced art teacher who has worked with, and taught cold wax medium before having attended Janet’s class previously.

Painting with Cold Wax Medium (Masterclass)
Led by Janet this workshop will run concurrently with the Introductory workshop. To attend this class you will have attended at least one of Janet’s classes before. You will be comfortable working with the tools, media and techniques and ready to extend your practice. Like the introductory class these will be fun and engaging with a focus on making. Each day we will participate in critiques where everyone in the class will have an opportunity to receive feedback about their work (from Janet and those in the class).
Prior to the workshop you will be asked to complete some preparatory work that will help you think about how to take a more critical and conceptual approach to how you engage with art-making; this will help guide your intentions throughout the workshop and help you think more deeply about your work after you leave. We will experiment with advanced techniques where you will be encouraged to experiment and explore with various materials and processes.
The two classes will come together at times where sharing of ideas and thinking will result in a richer experience for all. The main purpose of the two workshops is to encourage people to create, have fun and experience the joy of working with this vibrant, rich medium.

Janet is a contemporary visual artist living in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland whose practice engages with place, time, affect, world bending, and materiality. Her drawn-paintings are characterised by texturally rich, excavated, and striated surfaces that evoke ancientness, the hidden, the unseen, and the ephemeral.
Janet creates her work using oil paint mixed with beeswax (known as cold wax medium i.e. not encaustic), enabling a low-toxic practice that results in ephemeral, textural works. Using cold wax allows for thick and thin layering, sgraffito techniques, and diverse mark-making. A variety of wet and dry media are used to build visual and tactile depth, creating layered, ethereal surfaces that give each work its distinct presence.
In 2025, she led an international collective called Meitheal (an Irish term for people who support each other to bring in the harvest) to make a large artwork. This collaboration was born from time spent at the Burren College of Art in County Clare, Ireland in 2024 as well as 2025 with a focus on inclusivity, art-making, and shared joy. The Meitheal collective includes world-building-bending women from Scotland, Spain, the United States, Ireland, and Aotearoa New Zealand. The resultant work called Faultlines was exhibited at the Sluice World Building exhibition in Seyðisfjörður, Iceland in May 2025.
She teaches widely throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and in Ireland and has work in private and public collections locally and internationally.
Janet holds a Master of Fine Art (1st class hons.) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She will complete her PhD in Creative Practice in May 2026. More information can be found on her website www.janetmazenier.com and Instagram: @janetmaz
