INFORMAL AND FORMAL PAINTING

In this workshop we will learn to develop a more individual and sustained practise
by exploring contemporary and traditional directions and techniques.
Discover the principles of creating visual equivalents to express your observations, perceptions, ideas and emotions in painting.

Exploring improvisation techniques.
Gestural Painting.
Abstraction and Representation.
Developing spatial awareness.
Movement and direction.
Colour and Tonal space.
Modern and Traditional compositional structure.
Cultivating visual clarity and perception.
Creating structure in your work.
Spatial dynamics and Compositional organisation.
Each day participants will deal with different exciting and hands on techniques.
The mornings will be devoted to explorations, which will address the above aspects of painting and the afternoon is reserved for your independent work.
Individual critique and group discussion in a fun and supportive atmosphere.
Illustrated notes supplied.
Beginners, intermediate and advanced levels are welcome.

David is a traditionally trained full time professional artist with undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Central School of Art, the Victorian College of the Arts and the University of Melbourne. Masters at RMIT University, Melbourne. A former senior lecturer in art at RMIT University, Melbourne. With over two decades of teaching experience and over 30 solo exhibitions in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Auckland and Nelson and over 33 curated group exhibitions in Australia, New Zealand, Germany.

Materials for participants to bring:
Paints
Participants may choose to work in Acrylics or Oil.
For the classes we will be using predominately acrylic paint or oil
The basic colours are all that is needed.
2 yellows 2 reds 2 blues some earth colours plus white.
Yellow
Yellow light hansa or lemon yellow for mixing greens
Cadmium yellow or yellow deep for mixing oranges
Red
Cadmium red hue for mixing oranges
Magenta (dark) or Crimson, or Alizarin Crimson for mixing violets
Blue
Ultramarine Blue for mixing violets
Cerulean or Phthalo Blue for mixing greens
Earth Colours
Burnt Umber (mixed with Ult Blue is our black)
Yellow Ochre, Raw Sienna, Raw Umber (optional)
White.
Plus a small jar of Gesso (acrylic) to seal your paper. Some gesso supplied.
Any other extra colours you have eg. Violets or greens etc. you may wish to bring.
Recommended brands include:
Acrylic
Golden, Liquitex, Matisse Structure, Atelier (standard or interactive)
Oil
If using Oils any brand you already have is fine.
Art Spectrum, Windsor Newton, W & N Winton, Rowney, Pebeo etc.
We only use Odourless Mineral Spirit (OMS), Liquin or Atelier Smooth Gel Medium as a medium.
We clean our brushes in common vegetable oil and Sard soap.
OMS is not used for cleaning.
NO TURPENTINE is allowed in class.
Brushes
Round bristle brushes are the most flexible and good with acrylic/oil.
Sizes. Number 3, 6, 8
Small soft watercolour brush number 2.
Small housepainter brushes
You may also wish to bring any other brushes you own.
Any brand is fine. No need to purchase expensive brushes.
Paper
We will be working mainly on paper. Any low cost watercolour pads.
A3 or 12 x 16 inches (30x 40 cm) or larger is fine. (Avoid a very rough surface)
Any low cost medium weight paper is suitable.
It’s handy to bring some sheets of cheap A4 paper for quick sketch ideas.
Extras
Some glass palettes will be supplied.
Palette –sheet of glass is best
or large flat white plastic palette, or 2 large white dinner plates
Pencils and eraser Masking tape
2 jars for water Ruler
Cloth for cleaning brushes Any other art materials you wish to bring.
Bring some images, photos drawing etc that you may wish to work from.
