The "Passage of Time" is an augmented-reality theater experience designed to immerse it's audience in surrealist environments. These environments are inspired by dream-like states and idealistic experiences. The goal of "The Passage of Time" is to provide it's audience a temporary escape from the standard linear experience of time, by allowing them to stroll through scenery that could only exist in their wildest imaginations.
Process
Out of the initial six virtual scenes created, three were chosen as components of this project. These scenes were first chosen because of the personal preference of their creators, however as work continued they morphed, growing more homogenous. In the beginning developers were unsure exactly what the common thread between these environments was. They were all colorful, they all incorporated light in an evening sky, they all had a fantastic-surrealist quality, however, each scene felt distinctly different. That was until the idea of time arose. Time is a constant in life. Without time life itself would be impossible. When the scenes were thought of as memory capsules they suddenly became interconnected with each other.
In order to emphasize this interconnectedness, developers decided to add constant elements to "The Passage of Time". Examples of this are the sunset skybox over all the scenes, as well as the continuous songs in each of the three scenes.
Inspiration
This play was inspired by the fickle nature of time. While humans often assume the passage of time is linear and constant, memory tends to warp it. Trauma, illness, and emotion can all cause aspects of life to feel slowed or speed up. So in fact while humans can remember their lives almost independently of time, it is essential to their experience. Thus, this play demonstrates three memory-like capsules in time. The three scenes demonstrate the past, present, and future. Each depiction of place is different given their individual relation to time.
Meaning and Audience Experience
The message of "The Passage of Time" revolves around the idea that time is a gift. Every individual is put into this moment in history for a reason. Time is to be enjoyed, not wasted in useless and unhealthy manners. Be kind to yourself and others, appreciate what you have, and work hard towards what you want to achieve in life. These scenes are meant to be enjoyed in the moment. Ultimately the goal of this project is for the audience to take breath and wonder around these beautiful fantasy-like scenes, and appreciate the joy from this simple moment.
The Creation
Dance Sequence:
The scenes are the beauty of time, the dancers are the stillness.
The dance compliments the surrounding digital environment. The dancers were hand picked by each developer then selected for the best fitting stage. The developers decided that homogenous choreography would be the best aesthetic and artistic decision for this project. The continuous, calming flow and moments are meant to help the audience relax in order to fully immerse themselves in the fantastic scenes. The stages themselves are very detail heavy, therefore the surreal slowness of the dance is meant to balance out the stimulus, preventing viewers from becoming overwhelmed. The goal of this story is to help the audience appreciate the flow of time, and the stillness that can be found in it.
Music:
Each developer agreed to use one full song per stage. This was chosen in order to create the smoothest transition between environments, as well as reinforce a homogenous sequence throughout the play. This was an artistic decision based on the preference of the developers, who believe the experience of “A Passage of Time'' will benefit from a more simple audio element. The visual elements of this play are already quite intense, therefore it was decided a complex music scheme would be too overwhelming for the audience.
The Launch
The Poster
the team member in charge of the advertising poster had a very clear vision of what they wanted - a poster that highlighted all three scenes from the play and visually smoothly blending from one another imitating the transition we want the users to experience during the play. Using photoshop to edit the screenshot of the stages we each designed, and working to blend the edges of each in an aesthetically pleasing way. Then moving onto inDesign with the base image done, and working on what copy we wanted to share with the audience. Playing around with different fonts, colors and sizes until creating a coherent and visually pleasing poster. Making sure that the creators names, title of the project and class name were all displayed.
Above is an inital concept design drafted by another memeber of the group, in the end the directors ultimately decided a more true-to -the-stage poster would create a more realistic expectation for the audience. For this reason the second design, as shown here being creating in photoshop was chosen.
This design was drafted in 4 different version, then voted upon by the directors of "The Passage of Time"
The Trailer
Working on the promotional trailer video for the project the directors created 6 videos, 2 for each scene. The videos were a fly through of the entirety of each scene, showing the audience a snippet of this theater experience, including all its VFX. The videos are between 15-20 seconds, which allowed the directors to create a teaser just over a one minute for viewers.
We Present to You: "The Passage of Time"
These last 10 weeks as a group we struggled, learned, and grew stronger. We navigated technical and artistic issues while improving our individual communication skills. Through collaboration we were able to create beautiful, complex digital environments that reflect our own artistic preferences, and together an augmented reality theater experience unlike any art project we have ever created.
As individuals we are proud of our development these last 10 weeks and what we were able to achieve. We hope you enjoy this play as much as we enjoyed creating it.
Moorsh
Dust Particles: representing spores released by the surrounding mushroom forest
Ghost Orbs: show the spiritual quality of nature, as well as the danger it contains
Vinter
Ice Crystals: Light and ice particles: placed right above the dancers to attract the user's attention and lead them towards the dancers. Mitigates aggressively pushing audience in certain directions allowing them to roam around the environment
Snow: drifting all around the stage, snow particles fall slowly and sparsely, they do not cover the scenery for the user but add the element of a winter scene for the user
Atlantis
Sea Life: movement effect created a more realistic feel, completing the surrealist aspect of the environment
