The Rescue Scenario is conducted annually to confirm competence in rescue skills.
Equipment: Full scuba gear minus weights and suits, incorporating post-Covid adaptations.
An empty weight belt may be worn to simulate and practice that we ditch our weight belt first. Under no circumstances should any heavy gear or weights be allowed to drop to or damage the pool bottom. The sequence described below should be discussed prior to conducting the
Test.
Buddy Check
After buddy checks descend together giving clear and understood signals.
Mask Clear
Each diver should complete one full mask removal passing the mask around the body before refitting and clearing the mask.
Alternative Air Share (AAS)
Once settled on the bottom and ready, commence AAS exercise from 5m distance, the rescuer being the donor, the ‘out of air’ diver providing clear signals. Each buddy pair in turn demonstrates the use of the AAS (Octopus), each being the donor and
Receiver.
Controlled Buoyant Lift (CBL)
Simulated rescue commences with casualty lying face down on the pool bottom. Rescuer approaches, assesses and carries out a controlled buoyant lift to the surface.
On the surface, inflate own buoyancy compensator and the casualty’s. Lay casualty on his/her back and check that the airway is open/clear. Ensure both your casualty and you are buoyant and that the casualty is secure before towing commences. [May ditch weight belt (no weights)]
Commence towing casualty at arm’s length for 2 lengths of the pool, finishing at the deep end.
De-kit your Scuba FIRST. De-kit and successfully land the casualty.
Pool session complete.
