My philosophy of education is "each one teach one", as stated by MC KRS One. As an educator I will be responsible and expected to teach my knowledge, but I will be open minded enough to also learn from my students to grow as an educator. It does not matter where you come from, what age you are, or what level of education you have. You will always learn something from someone. In an interview by Jazzy’s World TV, KRS One said, “…if younger people listen to older people, they move faster amongst younger people because you got advanced knowledge. And when older people listen to younger people, we move faster in the older world because you got new knowledge so when we listen to each other we all grow. That is called culture” (Jazzy, 2023). With that being said, I want my students to enter my classroom feeling confident to voice their ideas and to question what is being taught to strengthen their critical thinking skills. I also want my students to leave the classroom with new knowledge, not only from myself but also from their peers.
I will implement “each one teach one” as an art teacher by showing examples of my artwork and techniques that can be used. I will encourage my students to also do the same with their peers and myself. I would also like to invite local artists from our communities to be guest artists. I believe bringing local artists from our communities will not only bring in an even more wealth of knowledge, it will also bring representation. To see someone flourishing in the dream you aim for, and they look like you and come from the same community as you, brings a spur of inspiration and motivation. I want my students to know that no matter where they come from, they can be as successful and more.
My main goal as an educator is to provide a safe and welcoming space for my students no matter what level of experiences they have in art. I want them to feel confident in creating and to try new things. I also want to create a community where everyone in the classroom can give each other feedback in a positive way and feel proud of who they are and what they are yet to create.
