Mentoring

Mentoring Undergraduate Students and Research Assistants

I am also proud of the mentorship that I have provided to students on McNair Fellowship Programs and Senior Thesis Projects, encouraging them to take an active role in research at every stage.

As a former McNair Scholar, myself, I know the importance of having mentors and advisors to guide their mentees through the academic process, as it is just as much as a process of intellectual discovery as it is learning the socialization that comes with the field (e.g. public speaking in research conferences, professionalism and networking skills during informal events, time management skills). Blessing and Trevor are prime examples of my passion for mentoring and advising students through the research process, as I encourage the students in my lab for dissemination and publishing opportunities, and provide other resources for academic and professional growth.

I am committed to taking an active role in increasing the participation of underrepresented groups through mentoring and advising. Over the course of my academic career, I have provided key mentorship to 48 students, the majority of them being members of underrepresented groups, including ethnic minorities, students with disabilities, low-income and first-generation college students. I have actively recruited the majority of my research assistants. Several of these students are co-authors on forthcoming manuscripts. Additionally, every semester, I give a presentation regarding how to apply to graduate programs, current University research programs, and national summer research programs, such as the ones I participated in as an undergraduate student. During these presentations, and throughout the semester, I communicate my willingness and excitement to mentor them individually regarding such opportunities. I also discuss my own experience with the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, and the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Opportunities Worldwide Fellowship Award that I received to conduct international research in France.
