The first Bathers represent the left bank of the river of the working class of Asnieres, who represent the bright future of France; and on the right the bourgeois class in La Grande Jatte who are in decadence as they have fallen victim to lust and vice. The well-dressed woman holding a fishing rod alludes to the "fishing" done by the bourgeois prostitutes of the area. The boat with the two soldiers flying the French national flag symbolizes patriotism.
