When Millet painted his pictures, he portrayed a peasant couple praying under a deep sorrow caused by the being in the basket, a little boy a few months old who had recently died. This would be their son and the peasants would not be praying the Angelus for their crops, but for their recently dead child. Millet chose to paint over the basket containing the child, blurring the former and leaving it empty, making people forget the true meaning of the work.
