This year, we chose to redesign Parking Lot P416. Surrounded by high traffic areas such as Gilman Drive, Library Walk, Mandeville Lane, and the new bike path, we saw potential for a multi-purpose building that would give students passing by a place to rest, study, and gather with friends.
Our project site has a strong connection to Gilman Drive, the main UCSD transitway. On the east side of our project site is Library Walk, which is the main non-motorized access to the UCSD campus. Simply put, Library Walk can be thought of as a central point, providing students with easy access to the campus in either direction. The only way to access our project site by vehicle is through Mandeville Lane.
Our location, Lot P416, currently serves as a site for three tented outdoor classrooms. The location previously served as a parking lot, and before that, it housed the International Student Office.
UC San Diego (UCSD) was established on Kumeyaay land, which is Native American land. UCSD started off as a marine science institute, where the Scripps Institute of Oceanography is currently located. UCSD was also the location of Camp Matthews from 1917 to 1964.
P416 was the location of the International Student Center until Summer of 2017 when it was replaced by a parking lot with 81 faculty and staff spots for convenience to the middle of campus.
UCSD has introduced a plan to increase the number of bicycle- and pedestrian-oriented travel trips, similar to UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis and CU Boulder. Increasing bicycle and pedestrian travel options can decrease air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), support campus economic development, and improve student health.
Campus walks and corridors support high volumes of pedestrian traffic and moderate bicycle and skateboard traffic. Ridge Walk is intended to be a multimodal corridor. Although Library Walk is closed to bicycles and skateboards, it is frequently used.
Bicycles and Micro mobility
The site is accessible to bicycles from Gilman Drive and Mandeville Lane. The newly opened Rupertus Walk connects the site and Ridge Walk, allowing flow from the west side of campus to enter the site.
Pedestrian Access
The site is mainly available through library walk for pedestrians. The newly renovated Rupertus Walk connects the site and Ridge Walk, allowing traffic from the west side of the campus.
Personal Vehicles
There are parking lots for faculty by the Student Health Services building and Mandeville Auditorium.
Temporary parking is available on the side of the road of Mandeville Lane.

Trees
Eucalyptus Trees surround the site on all sides.
Trees create a perimeter around site, blocking immediate access to site and limiting access for larger construction vehicles, which might make many construction activities difficult.
They might cause damage to sides of structure given their height and branches.
P416 is apart of the Historic Grove preservation boundary and must follow its set guidelines (Open Space Master Planning Study (2015, Page 51).
“The maximum height of buildings should not exceed tree height and should be determined on a case-by-case basis.”
“Building mass should be articulated to avoid large, continuous facades with the intent for the building to appear ‘set in a grove of trees’. ”
“Building additions should generally be oriented so that the narrow sides face public roads and prominent pedestrian paths, such as Library Walk, to enable views into the trees and prevent a ‘walled edge’.”
“Buildings should be finished in materials complementing the natural setting, colors and character of these areas. Colors will be reviewed by the campus color consultant and approved by DRB.”
Access
Site is boxed-in by Library Walk and side streets.
The surface area of our site is limited, so building vertically is optimal.
