UC San Diego is committed to promoting sustainable, efficient, high-quality buildings on its campus, including its many LEED-certified buildings. To meet the university's green building goals, we aim for this project to attain at least a LEED BD+C Silver certification. Our project is committed to fulfilling many of these goals by integrating several sustainability measures into the building and landscape design, including:
Promoting non-motorized transportation modes, including pedestrian and bicycle access (which can be enhanced with on-site bicycle storage)
Optimizing sunlight through strategic placing of windows and access points
Using plant coverings and building materials that reduce the urban heat island effect
Preservation of the existing tree canopy in the historic grove
Permeable pavement in the courtyard and at the northwest entry point
Safely recycling rainwater and graywater and reducing potable water use
Promoting water-efficient and drought-tolerant landscaping on the perimeter of the site and the rooftop
